Katherine "Kitty" Pryde was a 13½-year old Jewish girl whose genius level intellect allowed her to take college-level courses despite her young age. Kitty led a fairly normal life until she began suffering headaches of steadily increasing intensity, which were a result of her emerging mutant power. One afternoon, she had left school early because her migranes were getting unbearable. Her parents had called a Docter, and were outside conversing with him when Kitty first experienced her power. She was laying in bed, trying to find some kind of relief. Her head was pouding, and felt as if it would blow up at a moment's notice. Then, suddenly, it was gone. Kitty opened her eyes, wondering if she had actually died. And much to her surprise, she found herself laying on the living room floor. Kitty had disocovered that she was even more special than anyone would've thought.
Professor Charles Xavier arrived with three of the X-Men, his own team of mutant students who fought for peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. The team convinced Kitty's parents into allowing her to join Xavier's school, and she became the newest and youngest X-Men Trainee. Because of her high intelect, and advanced control of her power, she was given the chance to skip right past being a student. She choose to accept this offer, training to become a member of the X-Men. She was very valuable to the team, what with her advanced skill in various forms of martial arts, and her progressive knowledge in computer technology. Kitty originally called herself Sprite, but later adopted the codename Shadowcat. Xavier also arranged for Kitty to be enrolled in dance classes at the studio of instructor Stevie Hunter.
